Introduction

RCBOs (Residual Current Circuit Breakers with Overcurrent Protection) are ingeniously designed devices that integrate the functions of an RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) and an MCB (Miniature Circuit Breaker) in a compact form. They play a crucial role in providing personnel protection, fire protection, and line protection.
For personnel protection and fire protection purposes, when it comes to the residual current aspect, the type AC variant of RCBOs will trip in the presence of sinusoidal AC residual currents. Meanwhile, the type A version is capable of tripping even when there are pulsating DC residual currents.
RCBOs with a rated residual current of up to a maximum of 30 mA are utilized for safeguarding personnel, protecting materials, and preventing fires. Additionally, they serve as an extra layer of protection against direct contact.
The MCB component within the RCBO is responsible for safeguarding the lines against overloads and short circuits. It comes in characteristics B and C. By assigning an RCBO to each individual branch circuit, it effectively helps to avoid the unwanted tripping of circuits that are free from faults. This unwanted tripping might otherwise be caused by the accumulation of operation-related leakage currents or by transient current pulses that occur during switching operations.
An RCBO consists of two main parts: one part is dedicated to detecting fault currents, and the other part is for detecting overcurrent. It is equipped with a delayed overload/time-dependent thermal release (using thermal bimetal) which comes into action for low overcurrents. For higher overload and short-circuit currents, there is an instantaneous electromagnetic release.
The special contact materials employed in RCBOs ensure a long service life and provide a high level of protection against contact welding.

Advantages

The OSM10 RCBO is the world’s most compact Electromagnetic RCBO with a width of merely 1 MW.
  • Due to its narrow design, which is only 18 mm wide, this RCBO is perfectly suitable for both new building projects and the retrofit market, such as in old buildings.
  • In new buildings, compared to the 2 MW wide version, it can save 50% of the space. This enables the installation of more compact distribution boards, which are often more cost-effective.
  • Especially in projects where numerous circuits need to be equipped with individual residual current protection, smaller distribution boards can be installed, resulting in significant cost savings.
  • In old buildings, it’s extremely convenient to replace the existing 1-pole MCBs with the OSM10 RCBO that has a width of only 1 MW (without demanding additional space within the distribution board).
  • Through this replacement, the protection level in electrical circuits is improved by adding an extra layer of personal safety.
  • Thanks to the new compact pin busbars, these devices can be easily mounted and connected even in distribution boards with limited space available.
  • The new compact OSM10 RCBOs come with a wide variety of accessories, including auxiliary switches, fault signal contacts, arc fault detection devices, and pin busbars.
  • When you connect the RCBO with an arc fault detection unit, you’ll get a combination that occupies 2 MW in total, providing protection against residual currents, overloads/short circuits, and arc faults. This combination offers the best protection for people and assets.
Pin Busbars for Compact Devices
  • There is a compact pin busbar designed for the quick connection of compact 1P + N devices in 1 MW.
  • Thanks to the compact design of these busbars, it’s very easy to connect devices even in narrow distribution boards.
  • The innovative design allows the infeed at any point on the busbar without the need to use additional feeder terminals.
  • The pin busbars can be cut to the desired length, enabling flexible adaptation according to customers’ specific requirements.
